It is true as EvaInternazionale mentions, that some stat counting services can slow down the loading of every single page on your blog. This is because it takes a few split seconds to transmit the tracking code to the stat counting service, for each page loaded.
As a rule of thumb choose a stat analytics provider which resides on the same continent as your blog hosting service. Major blog hosts like blogspot and Typepad have servers all over the world, which means that if you sign up in Europe, your blog will be hosted from a european server.
If the server hosting your blog resides in Europe, the loading/answering time of Sitemeter is actually twice that of e.g. Google Analytics (just meassured it). This is because Sitemeter is US based, and sending the counting code back and forth across the Atlantic takes time. And more importantly because of the distance, data transfer is vulnerable to disturbance and might cause slow loading of the stat code, which again will slow down your entire blogs loading time.
Since Google Analytics have servers all over the world this is a very good bet, and it's widely acknowledged as providing de some of the best visitor analytics available today.
Whoa can't believe I actually understood all that myself :o (my tutor would be proud)
